Although fortune cookies are usually served at the end of a meal at a Chinese restaurant, they actually are not a traditional Chinese recipe.

These sugary cookies are crispy on the outside and filled with a fun proverb or saying in the inside. They are the perfect vessel to share some joy or to give thanks.

I am going to give you some fun ideas on how you can make these homemade fortune cookies your own. And we may even be filling them with a little surprise too!

Also these fortune cookies go perfectly for 10 Minute Easy Chicken Chow Mein or Air Fryer Egg Rolls. So make sure to check those recipe out too!

Fortunes For Fortune Cookies:

This is my favorite part about making fortune cookies. You can totally customize what you want your fortunes to say.

I love making these messages meaningful by sharing words of encouragement or offering an idea for service.

However, you can change up the fortunes to whatever you would like to say.

If you would like to use the ones I created, just print this printable sheet and use them for your fortunes.

Ingredients

  • 3 egg whites
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond emulsion
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • OPTIONAL:
  • 1/8 teaspoon gel food coloring of choice
  • Sprinkles of choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375. Cut the fortunes into strips.
  2. Add one stick of butter to a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 40 seconds to melt.
  3. Add egg whites to a mixing bowl.
  4. Add the sugar and beat with a hand mixer for 1 minute. The batter should be light and fluffy looking.
  5. Add the water, almond emulsion and melted butter.
  6. Mix to combine with the beaters.
  7. Add 1 cup flour and mix to combine.
  8. OPTION: add 1/8 teaspoon food coloring of choice.
  9. Using a tablespoon, scoop the batter on a parchment lined baking sheet. Spread to form a 3 inch circle. (Make sure to only do 2-4 at a time. You will have to work really quickly once they come out of the oven.)
  10. Bake for 6 minutes (just until browned slightly on the outside).
  11. Remove from the oven and immediately fold into a semicircle, leaving a 1/2 inch open on the end.
  12. Slip the fortune inside and press the bottom softly onto the edge of a cup, folding down the edges. Immediately place in a muffin pan to hold.
  13. OPTION: Seal 3/4 of the hot fortune cookies with a spatula by pressing the edges down slightly. Then fill with sprinkles instead of the fortune. Let cool completely and enjoy.
  14. Finish with the remaining batter.

Notes

Make sure you print and cut your fortunes ahead of time.
