Start a new, memorable Easter tradition with your family by recreating The Last Supper.
My children are still little right now, but it’s so important to me to teach them the reason we celebrate Easter and share with them events from The Last Supper in a kid-friendly way.
The Last Supper happens on what is now called Maundy Thursday, the day before Good Friday and three days before Easter. This is the night before Christ’s Crucifixion and when He ate His last meal with His disciples.
Having our own Last Supper has become a highlight of our Easter traditions, and something we will continue for many more years to come.
Creating a Last Supper can be as simple or as extravagant as you see fit for your individual family. Some years I create a lavish tablescape and use fancy plates. Other years we use our everyday plates and keep the decor simple.
I like to serve our Last Supper on a wood charcuterie board, but a butcher block, tray, or something of the sort can be also used.
Grape Juice or Wine– Of course any red drink can be used, but my family loves red grape juice. We take the grape juice with the bread and read the scriptures on communion. The wine symbolizes Jesus blood that was shed for us.
Bread — I like to serve naan or pita with crackers. Or sometimes all three! The bread symbolizing Jesus’ body that was broken for us.
Fruit and Nuts — Our fruit represents the freedom we can feel because of what Jesus did for us on the cross. Apples and nuts with honey are commonly served, but I like to incorporate multiple fruits for my kids!
My Last Supper dinner might look different than others, and that’s okay. I’m happy with keeping it a little more simple for now (by adding additional foods not commonly found in a Last Supper meal). As my children grow older, I will definitely incorporate more foods that are typically served, such as bitter herbs, herbed rice or couscous, and fish.
I hope this helps get the wheels turning a bit and inspires you to create your own Last Supper Easter Dinner for your family.
xoxo,
Meg
If serving as an appetizer, may I suggest Rosemary Grilled Lamb Chops as a main dish.
